Dispositional individual differences in cognitive effort investment: establishing the core construct

چکیده
Abstract Background Individuals tend to avoid effortful tasks, regardless of whether they are physical or mental in nature. Recent experimental evidence is suggestive individual differences the dispositional willingness invest cognitive effort goal-directed behavior. The traits need for cognition (NFC) and self-control related behavioral measures discounting demand avoidance, respectively. Given that these only moderately related, question arises reflect a common core factor underlying investment. If so, both might be more systematic fashion. To address this question, we aimed at specifying construct investment reflects tendency exert control. Methods We conducted two studies ( N = 613 244) with questionnaires motivation including assessment NFC, intellect, first calculated Pearson correlations followed by mediation models regarding intellect its separate aspects, seek conquer , as mediators. Next, performed confirmatory analysis hierarchical model second-order latent variable. First-order variables were reflecting NFC Finally, between scores general self-efficacy well Five Factor Model Personality validation purposes. Results Our findings support hypothesized assessed traits, where relationship specifically mediated via goal-directedness. established replicated explains shared variance first-order factors Conclusions Taken together, our results integrate disparate literatures on provide basis further research role behavior cost–benefit-models.

Individual differences in cognitive flexibility.
I s it better to be flexible, or persistent? A colleague once said that the secret to success in science is perseveration (no, not mere perseverence—that wouldn’t get you very far at all). Yet we all believe that the highest levels of cognitive function are associated with extreme flexibility—the ability to juggle many things at once and not get hung up on just one. Indeed, this ability to jugg...
متن کاملIndividual differences in cognitive arithmetic.
Unities in the processes involved in solving arithmetic problems of varying operations have been suggested by studies that have used both factor-analytic and information-processing methods. We designed the present study to investigate the convergence of mental processes assessed by paper-and-pencil measures defining the Numerical Facility factor and component processes for cognitive arithmetic ...

This study aimed at examining the main and interaction effects of increased intentional reasoning demands, planning time, and also language learning aptitude on syntactic complexity, accuracy, lexical complexity, and fluency (CALF) of 226 EFL learners’ performance on letter writing tasks. The participants were first randomly assigned to three experimental groups to be given a task with differin...
متن کاملEmotion, working memory task demands and individual differences predict behavior, cognitive effort and negative affect.
We examined whether positive and negative affect motivates verbal and spatial working memory processes, respectively, which have implications for the expenditure of mental effort. We argue that when emotion promotes cognitive tendencies that are goal incompatible with task demands, greater cognitive effort is required to perform well. We sought to investigate whether this increase in cognitive ...
